Individuals come to Papillon Recovery Centre with differences in skills and abilities, these differences influence the pace of their recovery. We like our clients to progress through treatment at a pace suitable for them, this typically occurs in five phases. Our programme is based on a Harvard Medical School Affiliate – MC Lean Hospital, a multi disciplinary team and experienced survivors of mental illnesses who act as coaches and advisors. Our clients are 18 years and older.
Sub Acute Phase
The first and only programme of its kind in Africa, Papillon utilises a five phase approach to treatment - of which the first three phases are regarded step-down treatment for people requiring a longer intervention than the traditional 21 days. This is commonly referred to as Sub-Acute treatment: A residential mental health service which shows results in assisting people suffering from a mental illness to receive treatment in a less restrictive and inspiring setting. Our different therapeutic approaches are acclaimed as breakthroughs in engaging clients in recovery. Led by caring professionals who are experts in their fields, adjunctive group sessions help clients find new ways to express their thoughts and emotions, learn new skills, build confidence, and interact with their peers and the community. Some clients may be not be ready, willing or even able to express their thoughts and feelings verbally due to being exposed to tradition therapy for years; at Papillon we cater for these clients specifically.
This time is spent providing therapeutic, social and recreational opportunities, which aid skills’ development and advance the achievement of individual and mental health goals. The client is systematically reintegrated into work life, in the form of a career, internship or vocation. A specialist team different to the sub-acute team, handles this process. The focus is on using the lessons learnt in the first three months to effect practical changes. Our aim is to help residents become independent, able to make their own decisions, attend school, obtain employment, build relationships, and contribute to their communities. We do take on clients who require only the last phase of treatment with us. These clients must be assessed by our team before we take them on, or be referred to us by a hospital or professional team we are affiliated with.
